Nestled in downtown Elon between All That Jas and Mediterranean Deli sits a university favorite, The Oak House. Part coffee shop and part bar, The Oak House was voted as the community’s favorite downtown Elon business for 2025, following 2024’s win.

Freshman Ayla Gonzalez frequents the business and said she spends time at The Oak House working on assignments and being productive.

“I love grabbing a latte and getting some work done,” Gonzalez said. “It’s a nice change of scenery that isn’t far from campus at all.”

Gonzalez said she also utilizes the space to catch up with friends and relax.

“It can be hard to slow down sometimes, but The Oak House offers a spot just for that," Gonzalez said.

Apart from the drinks and food, The Oak House also holds social events, including trivia nights on Wednesdays, guest speakers and a mini stage for live performances.

“The Oak House is a must try,” Gonzalez said.

Burlington Beer Works is a co-op in downtown Burlington — meaning it is owned by the community itself and made up of 2,300 owners. Tracy Schmidt, general manager of Burlington Beer Works, said most of its sourcing comes from Alamance County farms and includes over a dozen partnerships with local businesses such as Converge Coffee and Haand pottery.

Burlington Beer Works also employs Elon students and hosts several events for the Elon community, Schmidt said.

“There are several departments within Elon that held their Christmas parties with us,” Schmidt said. “This spring we are looking to partner with the greek life community to do profit share events here.”

Burlington Beer Works has a rotating draft beer menu with 12 beers on tap at a time that are brewed on site, according to its website. Its food includes burgers, sandwiches, soups and salads. One thing that is less widely known about the restaurant is that Burlington Beer Works serves brunch until 4 p.m. everyday, Schmidt said.

“I don’t know that a lot of students realize, but it’s not just weekends, but every day that we’re open,” Schmidt said.

Burlington Beer Works has been open since 2019 and, according to its website, its goal is being a community space as North Carolina’s first cooperative brewery and restaurant. According to its website, for $100 one can buy an ownership share of the co-op, which means access to owners only events, a vote for the co-ops board members and discounted merchandise.

For store manager of Maple View’s County Line Creamery, Sydney Brooks’ favorite flavor is the “Gibson.” With a wide range of ice cream options and even special edition combinations during holidays, the Maple View’s County Line Creamery is a staple within downtown Gibsonville.

Brooks said all of the ice cream is homemade. Its main location, known as the farm location, is in Hillsborough and that’s where all the ice cream is made.

Brooks started in 2019 and has stayed because the hours of the shop are so flexible with her demanding schedule as a mother. What she loves most about working at the creamery is serving ice cream to customers, especially kids. She loves to see a smile on their face.

“It’s definitely worth it when you hand a little kid an ice cream cone and their face just lights up,” Brooks said.

Brooks said she wishes people knew about Maple View.

“Some people like to live next door and they don’t even know it’s here,” Brooks said.

Despite this, Maple View continues to be a hit within downtown Gibsonville.

The Koury Athletic Center was voted the “Best Fitness Center” of 2025. Since opening in the spring of 1994, the building has become a place of exercise, relaxation and community for Elon students.

The center features Jordan Gym, a 7,700-square-foot gym with six basketball hoops and space for two volleyball courts. It also includes Beck Pool, an indoor facility with more than 190,000 gallons of water and six 25-yard lap lanes. Additionally, the fitness center offers an aromatherapy program developed by Campus Recreation and Wellness to enhance emotional well-being and regulate sleep quality.

Sophomore Parker Stevens, an employee who works at the front desk, compared the Koury Athletic Center to those at other universities, noting Elon’s center offers free access for students and their guests. He highlighted the welcoming environment and supportive community.

“I visited other colleges, I went to NC State and UNC. First of all, you don’t have to pay to get in here if you bring a guest. That’s nice because I went to UNC and you have to pay like 10 bucks,” Stevens said. “We also have much friendlier staff. We’re big on customer service and just being very friendly to everybody. Make sure everybody feels welcome. It’s not like a judgmental area.”

Sophomore Kat Kester, a cycling instructor, said the fitness center stands out for its excellent facilities and friendly staff. She highlighted Koury’s strong sense of community, where students and staff interact and support each other.

“Everyone is so loving and supportive. I’m a new hire but everyone has been so supportive of the whole process, and it’s just a loving environment, even the front desk people when they come and greet you they’re always asking how your day is and remember you by name and all that good stuff,”

One of the newest veterinary practices in the Elon community, Elon Oaks Veterinary Hospital opened its doors in 2021 when owner and veterinarian Kristina Belton decided to start her own practice.

“I wanted to own a vet clinic because I wanted to have the opportunity to shape the practice culture and build a place that was a great place for people to work,” Benton said.

Located beside the town of Elon offices, Elon Oaks prides itself on being community-centered, according to its website. Belton said the veterinary hospital focuses on education, which is demonstrated through its partnership with Campus Alamance. She said after this past summer, the practice invited two of the student interns to join as team members.

“It’s really fun to have students around, because when we have a student that’s shadowing or in the internship program, they just get so excited about learning new things and seeing new things,” Belton said. “And it really helps to remind us, as people that are in this profession, of how cool the things that we do can be.”

With Elon University only a few blocks down the road, Belton noted the practice frequently helps the pets of Elon students. She said she appreciates the strong commitment many students have to looking after their animals.

However, Belton said what truly sets Elon Oaks apart from other veterinary hospitals is its promise to be an inclusive space.

“We believe that part of being really active and a partner for the community is making sure that everyone knows they are welcome here,” Belton said.

Belton said she is grateful for the community support and to have her practice acknowledged for its work.

“I’m just really grateful that we had the opportunity to receive this award,” Belton said. “We’re looking forward to continuing to support the community.”

Persnickety Books opened its doors in 2017 and is located on Main Street in downtown Burlington. As soon as they walk in, customers can find stacks upon stacks of books and a seating area where they can enjoy a drink from the coffee bar.

The bookstore has three floors and carries a large variety of titles in store, as well as an online store. The coffee bar is located on the main level and serves a variety of drinks. Persnickety Books often hosts events including things such as open mic night, which happens the second Friday of every month; writers club onWednesdays; and other specialty events such as tarot card readings.

The owners, Ian Baltutis, Shawna and Herb Gentert, opened Persnickety Books when they realized that there was no used book store in Burlington.

“I thought that’s really sad, so we opened one,” Shawna said.

Shawna describes Persnickety books as “a third space.” She said she hopes Persnickety Books can become a space for Elon students to get away from campus, and who want a comfortable safe place to read, study and relax.

Persnickety Books has recently started ordering in a few new books, rather than just selling used copies. Shawna said they have started ordering titles that students ask for frequently and they are able to order in specific books that students request.

“When we overhear someone in the store go ‘Oh my gosh!’ because they have found that unexpected treasure,” Shawna said. “That’s the beauty of carrying used books.”

Persnickety Books is open Tuesday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit Persnickety Books’ website for more information about events and to purchase books online.

Triad Goodwill Store and Donation Center Burlington is a popular place for affordable items and making a positive impact in the community. The store offers a variety of gently used clothing, furniture, home goods and more.

Lisa Perkins, senior store manager, credits the store’s success to its dedicated team and the quality of its donations.

“We’re the biggest and the best. We get a lot of stuff. My staff works really hard to get it out, and we get great donations,” Perkins said.

Triad Goodwill is more than just a place to shop — it’s a way to give back to the community. The store uses 87 cents of every dollar to support programs that help people in the five counties it serves.

“When people shop here, it really does help the community,” Perkins said.

The variety and impact of Triad Goodwill stand out, especially in how donations and sales contribute to the community. Perkins said she enjoys seeing the different items donated and the impact of each purchase.

In 2015, a community meeting was called in downtown Burlington to discuss the possibility of holding a pride event in Alamance County. Just a few months later, the first Alamance Pride took place and it has been a beloved community tradition since.

Founding board member and current Alamance Pride president Ken Smith sees the impact it has had on the community in shattering norms.

“It breaks preconceived notions and stereotypes about how conservative we are or that we're not a welcoming place,” Smith said. “People need to know that they can live their lives here and that there is community. You may not necessarily have to leave your home and move to a larger city to live your life and be out and be authentic.”

At the first Alamance Pride almost 10 years ago, Smith and his fellow board members were especially moved by the turnout of young queer people.

“This is giving hope and meaning to a lot of younger folks who are growing up here who may suffer from bullying or they may not be accepted by families,” Smith said. “Younger people could find that community.”

The event relies on community support, from sponsors and merchants to the local police and parks and recreation. But support has remained high and the investment in community interests has paid off.

“People didn't think it was possible to be out or to have progressive causes or anything like that in this county,” Smith said. “When pride was formed it really showed the way and broke that ground and demonstrated that things here are possible.”

The Elon Farmers Market has been named the Best Town of Elon Event for the second year in a row, recognizing its role as a cherished community gathering space. Managed by Sarah Bass, Farmer’s Market Manager and Downtown Development assistant, the market has become a vibrant place for locals and Elon University students to gather on Thursday afternoons.

“The Farmers Market is a staple of Downtown Elon that brings together locals and Elon University students to support farmers and small business owners within our community,” Bass said. “Every season we strive to cultivate a sense of community, support sustainability, and create meaningful connections over fresh, locally grown produce and handmade goods."

The Farmers Market runs from April to October, featuring a diverse array of vendors offering everything from fresh produce to artisanal crafts. Live music, friendly faces, and the charm of Elon’s Downtown makes the market a key event for Elon’s Event Calendar.

Elon Mayor, Emily Sharpe praised the market’s impact in an email to Elon News Network.

"We are very appreciative for the awards of ‘Best Town of Elon Event'" Sharpe wrote. "The Elon Farmers Market… helps bring our community together, and we are so proud of their success. Thank you to everyone who voted for us! We appreciate your support."

The upcoming 2025 farmers Market season will run from April 3 to Oct. 30, with even more opportunities for the community of Elon to connect with local growers and makers. Sarah Bass and the Farmers Market team look forward to welcoming new and returning faces.

The recognition highlights the power of shared spaces and events in fostering community, sustainability, and connection. For the town of Elon, the Farmers Market continues to be more than just an event — it's a beloved tradition.

When studio manager Kelsey Bender entered Feel Better Yoga for the first time, she was surrounded by warmth. Originally from New York, her and her husband moved down to North Carolina for better weather. By sheer luck she met a studio manager of Feel Better Yoga while taking horticulture classes at the local community college. They told her about a work trade/ambassador program where she could work at the studio.

Then the rest is history.

Feel better Yoga offers a wide range of classes starting at 5 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. They have a total of around 50 classes each week. Bender said they get future yogis from all sorts of backgrounds and ages, ranging from students to senior citizens.

Bender said at Feel Better Yoga it’s not about how well you can master a stance or even touch your toes, but it’s about fostering a warm and comfortable environment.

“Yoga is just about whatever you want it to be,” Bender said.

Upon entry into Feel Better Yoga, people are met with numerous uplifting quotes handpainted by the owner on the walls.

“I felt immediately inspired, just like looking around and seeing all of the quotes, and it just made me feel really accepted,” Bender said.
