GloCo Cat

Best GloCo Cat
Cinder

School can be a very stressful time in a person’s life, and many students rely on cuddling up with their pets to unwind from a busy day. But college students usually don’t have the option to bring their fur babies with them. That’s where the Global Neighborhood cats come in.

Global Neighborhood residents have found a community within a group of cats who have made themselves at home outside of Global Commons.

Sophomore Alice Efremov is one of many students who have bonded with the kitties, particularly Cinder, by bringing them food and treats, grooming them and petting them.

Cinder is a large, fluffy gray cat that loves to interact with the people who spend time with her.

“Cinder is the most lovely one and she is incredibly soft so she’s my favorite, but I just love all of them so much,” Efremov said. “My favorite moment has been when cinders recently fully laid down in my lap and just let me pet her. Plus, it was after I gave her a treat so she wasn’t sticking around for food.”

“I got close with them over the summer and gained their trust. Then I started bringing them treats and stuff and brushing Cinder so that she wouldn’t get matted,” Efremov said. “Now they’re at a point where they know what noise [my friend] and I make and they come out running 95% of the time.”

Efremov said of the cats, Cinder is the most interactive with students. Efremov wants other students to know that there are certain ways you should, and shouldn’t, interact with the cats.

“I think especially at the beginning of the year people need to understand that they are not starving and every first year doesn’t need to feed them,” Efremov said. “That’s why I only give them treats, because they have quite enough food. Just respect their boundaries and don’t overfeed them.”

Stamp

Greetings from
Best Postage Stamp
Pinback Buttons
Sarah T. Moore | Elon News Network

As of Jan. 17, the United States Postal Service has announced 30 different sets of stamp designs to be released throughout 2024 — some of which are already on sale or available for pre-order, such as the annual “Love” and “Lunar New Year” stamps.

While all the stamp designs stood out in their own way, the one that Elon News Network staff were most excited about was the “Pinback Buttons” Forever stamps.

With 10 different designs, each by a different artist, the 20 stamps on the pane promote a vibrant and positive energy often lacking from the envelopes we send and receive in the mail room. For six of 10 artists, the bright and colorful “Pin back Buttons” artwork is their first project with USPS and we hope to see more of their work in the future.

Designed by Greg Breeding, an art director for USPS, the stamps are a nod to the over 120 year history of pin back buttons.

“The designs and slogans adorning buttons reflect the era and values of the time in which they were created, like any other piece of pop culture ephemera,” the official stamp brief says. “In this way, pin back buttons become historical tools providing insight into the moods, sentiments, and world views of people living in a particular time and place.”

While the face of the stamp is meant to look like the 3D pins they drew inspiration from, the pack of the pane is also designed to look like the back of the physical object.

Pin back buttons can serve as a memento of the wearer’s ideals and interests and while these stamps cannot be fastened to clothing or a bookbag, the artwork is a reminder to lean into things that make you happy and share that enthusiasm with those around you.

Circle K

Greetings from
Best Circle K Snack Run
Kettle Corn Popcorners
Ryan Kupperman | Managing Editor of elonnewsnetwork.com

Circle K is not only a staple of Elon’s campus, but also a staple of student life. Though the gas station is essential for the student and staff populations with cars, the more important aspect of the convenience store is its snack options. While I acknowledge that everyone has their own food preferences, I am going to share with you my pick for the most elite Circle K snack run.

First and foremost, I applaud Circle K for being well rounded. There are little-to-no snack categories that cannot be found, or in other words, there is something for everybody. When it comes to snacking, there are a few must-have categories: Sweet, crunchy, salty, chocolatey, savory and fruity. The trick is figuring out how to overlap snacks to check all of these boxes.

The most important item in any good snack run is the drink; this is what I always start with. Though Circle K is not always swift in restocking, a lemon Brisk iced tea can fulfill both the sweet and the fruit flavors. It also falls on the cheaper side at a buck and some change and comes in a bigger bottle (more bang for your buck) than most other drinks.

Next in rapid succession: Kettle Corn Popcorners, Sweet Tarts Gummies fruit splitz and chocolate covered pretzels. Kettle Corn Popcorners may be the snack run’s MVP. Crunchy, salty and savory, this snack comes in a size larger than a normal chip bag but smaller than a family-sized portion. It also obviously checks the most boxes out of any other snack. The Sweet Tart gummies cover sweet and fruity, while chocolate pretzels pull more than their own weight with crunchy, salty and chocolatey.

Other acceptable options that may cover nonessential categories could be any form of ramen. Spicy chicken or spicy shrimp flavors are great ways to get a spicy fix, along with other spicy chips which can count for the spicy, crunchy and/or salty categories. Some other fan favorites are the Circle K fountain drink and the Circle K donut. These can be substituted as or in addition to one’s choice of drink or sweet.

Construction

Greetings from
Best Construction
The Elon Sign
Avery Sloan | Managing Editor of The Pendulum

While the addition of Acorn in the library, the plaza next to Pandora’s Pies and the construction on East Haggard Avenue are more noticeable changes from this year, the new Elon sign in front of admissions is my favorite Elon construction project.

Naturally, this sign has become a first day of classes photo location, however I also think it serves a few other vital purposes on campus. Firstly, if one ever happens to accidentally stumble upon campus and is suddenly unsure where they are, this sign would be a helpful indicator. Secondly, if one ever happens to forget how to spell our four letter school, this sign would be a helpful indicator. However, if the latter is true for any Elon students, it might be time to delete ChatGPT and crack a book.

Another reason the new sign might come in handy is in case anyone in facilities management felt they needed a new challenge. A consensus among anyone I’ve talked to on campus is that Elon’s facilities, especially its lawns, always look immaculate. While this in no way is a negative, a new sign and herds of students looking for a photo opportunity to dodge, is a new challenge.

This sign masterfully combines some of Elon’s most iconic features, including the university’s colors and brick base. Any Elon student can attest to the fact that bricks are an important feature of the campus’s design and that bricks mysteriously going missing are an important Elon tradition. Fortunately, this sign also succeeds as the bricks featured seem to be more securely fastened than some bricks across campus pathways. Due to the signs overall appearance and more subtle purposes it serves, this sign received a “Best Of” feature.
